Education Pays Off Big – Even In A Recession

First of all let me state that education is never a bad idea. If you think it is or you are wondering whether or not to return to School – let me answer it for you quickly and succinctly; Go Back to School. As you can see below, even in tough times the ones with a College Degree are faring much better during the recession than those that don’t. So if you have been laid-off and are thinking of going back to school or finishing school, all I can say is the numbers would support it. For those of you like myself that have children at home, print out this graph and put it on the fridge to remind them of why education is important.

Visual: U.S. Map of Unemployment by Major Metro – March 2009

Iowa is faring very well amongst the other states in the U.S. having more than one city in the lowest unemployment numbers. In March, 109 metropolitan areas reported jobless rates of at least 10.0 percent, up from 14 areas a year earlier, while 95 areas posted rates below 7.0 percent, down from 329 areas in March 2008. El Centro, Calif., recorded the highest unemployment rate, 25.1 percent. The areas with the next highest rates were Merced, Calif., 20.4 percent; Yuba City, Calif., 19.5 percent; and Elkhart-Goshen, Ind., 18.8 percent. Among the 18 areas with jobless rates of at least 15.0 percent, 12 were located in California. Houma-Bayou Cane-Thibodaux, La., and Iowa City, Iowa, registered the lowest jobless rates, 3.6 percent each in March, followed closely by Ames, Iowa, at 3.7 percent.

Job Board Wars!! Web War Winner May Surprise You

The battle for the most trafficked job board is always an interesting contest to watch. It got really interesting a couple of years ago when CareerBuilder partnered with a ton of print media and subsequently left Monster in the proverbial dust. Since then there have been a number of up and coming job boards and new competitors. These new competitors have done a lot to try and displace both Monster and CareerBuilder but as the numbers clearly show none are really all that close or even in the same neighborhood. That neighborhood by the way is the listing of the top 50 web properties.

As you look at the numbers for Monster and CareerBuilder you cannot help but notice that very little now seperates the two. From a recruiter perspective I think both leave a lot to be desired, but just like on American Idol who I think should win (Danny Gokey) is not always going to be who America picks. War on!

Engaging the 21st Century Multi-Generational Workforce

Group portrait

A brand new study just released last week from the MetLife Mature Market Institute details the most important factors for engaging different segments of the workforce. Titled “Engaging the 21st Century Multi-Generational Workforce”, the study indicates that employers can maximize the strength of their workforces and optimize worker productivity by using best practices, geared to the various generations. Identifying the values of the groups, the report reflects the “hot buttons” that are most effective in producing the desired motivation.

Conducted in partnership with Boston College’s Sloan Center on Aging & Work, the study explores the drivers of engagement for employees of different ages, including demographic characteristics, factors related to the job, and work-team factors. The Institute defines “engagement” as “a positive, enthusiastic, and affective connection with work that motivates an employee to invest in getting the job done, not just ‘well’ but ‘with excellence’”.

Also noteworthy was the MetLife finding that older workers are more engaged than younger workers. For many business leaders, this information will come as no surprise. The research suggests that “focusing on the talent management of older individuals is important because they may best relate to the Baby Boomer customer base responsible for $3.8 trillion of annual spending in the US. They also found the highest levels of engagement among women, without elder care responsibilities, in good physical and mental health, with a positive self-perception and those having job security.

Three key findings indicate that employee engagement can be greatly enhanced by simple and cost-efficient efforts, including providing strong training and development opportunities, encouraging work team inclusion, offering customized benefits plans, and promoting a culture of workplace flexibility and supervisor supportiveness. None of these findings came as new revelations to us and we found the absence of life-work balance interesting, but not surprising, given the economic times.

Wise employers will update their assumptions about the generations, based on these findings and will pay particular attention to how they may enhance employee engagement through the quality of the employment experiences they offer.

Crazy Business or Brilliant Start-up? #12

jumpstart

Although it may seem that everyone and everything is online these days, there’s still a fair portion of the population that isn’t part of the social networking revolution. It’s not necessarily that they don’t want to be involved—professionals are realizing the benefits of connecting online. However, it’s these professionals, especially those over 45, who are more likely to feel daunted by the latest wave of online interaction. Enter JumpStart Social Media, a web service to get the not-so-tech-savvy up and running with their own online profiles.

For $89.95, JumpStart’s webwise team will get users set up with a profile on either Facebook and LinkedIn and leave them with a reference guide. JumpStart uses a web-based questionnaire to determine the subscriber’s needs, and then uses this information to create a personal profile. Everything is then submitted for review to the subscriber, who then approves (or disapproves) the profile. When users change their password on either site, JumpStart is no longer able to access their profile, which keeps the process secure. For people who have already set up an account on either site, a $9.95 personalized guide is offered to help users get the most from their online profile.

JumpStart is a new service from social marketing consultancy Digital Brand Expressions, based in New Jersey. It fits in well with the current focus on the importance of personal branding, and the rise of using social networking to establish oneself as an industry expert, attracting employers in a recession.

Will they flourish or flounder?? Hmmm, I am guessing flourish, especially with certain generations. =)

Economic Conditions Snapshot, March 2009: McKinsey Global Survey Results

graph_with_arrow

A gloomy economic stasis has taken hold, responses to a McKinsey Quarterly survey—in the field from March 10, 2009, through March 16, 2009—indicate. The percentage of the executives who say economic conditions have gotten worse at the national level hasn’t increased, but fewer than a third expect an upturn this year.

Executives overall are confident with how their companies are managing the crisis, though 53 percent expect profits to drop in the first half of 2009, and the number expecting to shed workers has jumped eight percentage points in six weeks. Companies that executives describe as well managed are likelier than others to be reducing both operating costs and capital spending—and perhaps not weakening operations a great deal, because these companies are also likelier than others to be improving productivity. Overall, the results show that most companies are not actively seeking more cash.

This survey also solicited executives’ views on some topics of intense public debate. Respondents think “bad banks” are a good idea, disagree on whether CEOs are paid too much, and overwhelmingly say the public trusts business less than it did before the crisis—and lay the blame at the doors of financial firms.

Social Networks Surpass Email:What’s The Impact On Corporate Learning?

According to the Nielsen Online internet marketing and research firm, social network and blogs have become more popular than email:

socialnetworks

As reported by eMarketer and CNET, after rising steadily in recent years, in this past year, social networks and blogs for the first time ranked ahead of email in the Nielsen Online study. This means that more people are now using interactive and open-user social networking and blog related interfaces than email. See the chart above for the specific numbers.

Article:

I have said and written many times that I love my job, my company and what I do for a living. As I travel and speak at conferences, I know I am not the only one. You are probably scanning the publication for information that can help you in your job or can help your company gain some type of advantage. You saw my headline and were intrigued.

elance-online-work-index-april-20093

Elance, released its April edition of the ”Elance Online Work Index,” ranking the top skills businesses are seeking on the Web.

Based on data from more than 100,000 jobs posted on Elance over recent months, the Elance Online Work Index reveals that IT and marketing skills continue to be in high demand with businesses in search of specific expertise in open source technologies, computer programming, design, online marketing, social networking and writing. Top skills in demand include PHP, MySQL, HTML Graphic Design, Writing, AJAX, Adobe Illustrator, WordPress, Photoshop, Flash and Blogs. New data also show surging demand for social media skills and skills that deliver world-class web and application user experiences.

  • Open Source on the Rise: The overall trend of businesses migrating to open source technology solutions is stronger than ever with PHP (#1) programming now topping the Index followed closely by MySQL (#2). Crazy Business or Brilliant Start-up? #11

deskspacegenie

While remote working is easier than ever, working from home or the nearest Starbucks can quickly lose its appeal. Enter Desk Space Genie, a new website that advertises vacant desk space. The service helps businesses make a bit of money from their unused office space and enables cash-strapped freelancers or other small businesses to become more established.

Desk Space Genie lets space-seeking ‘deskers’ search for a space by postal code or town, contacting the advertisers directly. The site lists vacancies in most major cities around the UK, covering ‘all inclusive’ desk packages with wifi and other utilities, or more basic ‘pay for what you use’ services. The site is free to use until 1 May 2009.

Although plenty of general-use classified websites list office space for rent, Desk Space Genie is the first I have spotted that’s targeting this niche. Helping others save money and resources, it seems like a timely endeavor. One to create for deskers and desklords in your part of the world?

Do you think this would work in the US?  Are you the one to make it work?

Is the Economic Sky Really Falling?

business_record

This is an article that I wrote for the Des Moines Business Record, I hope you find it useful.

Article:

There is a lot to be said about things falling out of the sky in Iowa during winter. We have had snow, ice, rain and the beloved winter mix, which is apparently a mixture of all three. Add to that, for the first time in my life I witnessed “thundersnow.” A term I don’t think I will ever forget and one that sounds like the title of a B movie.

What I find interesting is that these events come and go on a fairly regular basis. No matter how bad the storm, we know in a day or two it will be gone and in some cases within a couple of hours. That is just the way weather works in Iowa, and we are used to it.
